Week 2: Famous Last Words

This is week two of this class and there still hasn’t been that much writing. I got all good comments on my storytelling for week 1. So I would say that is my best writing so far, even though I wrote the story last year. I have been really struggling with trying to come up with topics for my storybook this week. There are so many options that I cannot narrow it down. I know I would like to write about a fairytale or trickster but I cannot find the story I want to base it off of. This has been causing me major problems. I did ask for some help from our teacher. So hopefully she will be able to lead me in the right direction. My other classes are up and going. I have already done two lab assignments and did a homework that is due this week. I can tell I am going to be very busy in the next couple of weeks and I hope I can stay a week ahead in this class. I would like to keep getting more and more ahead but other classes will be the deciding factor. I should be able to do that as long as I plan my time wisely and stay focused. I got to read a couple new peoples introductions and it was crazy to see where they came from. Both people traveled to Oklahoma for college. I think that takes a lot of guts to be able to move away from everyone you know. I considered going out of state for school but when the final decision came I stayed right here in Oklahoma. I applaud them for their bravery. I have not really had a lot of time to watch the news or read anything in the newspaper. I hope my semester keeps going well.

Essay Week 2: Sisters Envy

Siblings can be a blessing sometimes and other times they can cause you terrible pain. In the story of Cupid and Psyche, I believe that Psyche saw her sisters as a good part of her life in the beginning. In the story Psyche's sisters get married and move away leaving Psyche alone. She was so beautiful that no mortal could bring themselves to marry her. So her father is told a terrible being would take her and she would be wed to him. This happens, but much to Psyches surprise, the being was not terrible to her. He cared deeply for her but would not reveal who he was. Psyche sisters find out she has been taken and wed. They come home to console their grieving parents. They then decide to go to the cliff where Psyche was taken. Psyche brings them down to her home but does not reveal anything about her husband. She sends her sisters off with riches and believes all is well. On the other hand, the sisters became very envious of Psyche and decided to find out more about her mysterious husband. They go back and again are greeted by Psyche. They start asking questions again. Psyche not remembering the answers from the last time tells new ones. She then sends the sisters away with riches. The sisters know right away that she doesn't know who the husband is. They decide that Psyche doesn't deserve the lifestyle she is in and come up with a plan to take it away from her. Again, they return and start asking questions and filling Psyche head with evil ideas. This causes Psyche to turn on her husband and makes him leave her. While Psyche is out trying to find her husband the sisters return one at a time to try to take the husband for themselves. Her sisters end up dying in this attempt. After many tasks Psyche gets her husband Cupid back. If the sisters would have been happy for their sister then none of this would have happened. Instead their envy led to their own death. So be happy for your siblings even if they have more than you. Your envy could cause you to do terrible things.

Storytelling Week 2: Psyche Betrayal

There is one night that I know and remember the best while I stayed in the house of Cupid. He had married Psyche without his mother knowing. So to keep word from getting out, he would not let Psyche see him. He would talk to her and embrace her at night while there was no light inside the house. Psyche was fine with this because she loved his embrace and figured that she would eventually see her loving husband. Cupid found out that Psyche's sisters were going to cause problems and urged her to avoid them. Psyche pleaded to see her sisters and Cupid couldn't say no. Cupids only command was for Psyche not to reveal anything about him. Psyche talked to her sister and sent them on their way with handfuls of jewels and gold. This caused the sisters to envy Psyche and plan to ruin her marriage. This is what happened from the second meeting.

"Psyche  please let us great you," said the sisters. Psyche had the wind bring them to her. "Hello, sister welcome back to my home," Psyche said as the sisters were lowered to the ground. "Sister we are worried about you," said the sisters. "We have heard that you do not know what your husband looks like. You know what the legend said about your marriage." "I know the legend said I am to marry a demon but my husband is a lovely man," replied Psyche. "You have never seen him though! How do you know he isn't a horrible demon?" the sisters continued. "You should hide a lamp and a sword tonight. When your husband falls asleep, grab the lamp and sword. Cut off the demons head then come to us. We will protect you when you are alone." With that Psyche sent her sisters away.

Psyche had a scared look on her face. I wish I could have talked to her. Psyche turned around grabbed my handle and found a sword. She hid us behind the curtains and waited for Cupid. He showed up after darkness set in. They embraced each other and Cupid eventually fell asleep. Psyche got up and grabbed me and the sword. She lit my wick and the room lit up. She saw Cupid and knew she had made a huge mistake. She dropped the sword and took me over to Cupid. I tried to hold onto my oil but a little drop slipped from my grasp. The hot oil dropped on Cupids shoulder. He woke up in scolding pain. He noticed the sword on the ground and knew Psyche had betrayed him. As Cupid went to fly away Psyche dropped me and the room went dark. Both were gone and I was left alone. If only I could have stopped her but I am only a lamp.

Author's Note: I wrote my story based on the Cupid and Psyche story. Specifically parts 7-10. I wanted to tell this story from a different view. I chose the lamp because the lamp did have a firsthand view of everything that happened that night. This is also the picture used in part 10 (Psyche's Husband Revealed). I hope you enjoyed the story!

Week 2: Cupid and Psyche

This week I am reading Cupid and Psyche. This story has been very interesting to me. There are many parts that have stuck out. A girl is kidnapped and told the story by an old lady.
First is the fact that Venus becomes basically jealous of Psyche. This happens because Venuses followers believe Psyche is the human embodiment of Venus. Thus, they stop worshiping Venus and start worshiping Psyche.
Second, Psyche is so beautiful that every mortal is overcome by the thought of marrying her that no one tries to.
Then the fact that Cupid is actually a bad guy surprised me. He supposedly flies around causing trouble. Venus, who is his mom, sends him to ruin Psyche's life. Cupid instead marries her without her knowing that it is him.
Psyche wealth and happiness makes her sister envy her and causes them to plan a way to destroy her marriage with cupid. This works and ends up with the sisters dieing.

The second half of the story starts getting really good. All the introduction of the main characters is done by this point. I have decided to write what stands out in each little section.
Venus and the Goddesses: Venus finds out about her son, Cupid, disobeying her and marrying Psyche instead. This infuriated her and caused her to threaten to take away all of Cupids possessions like his wings. She also threatened to destroy Psyche.

Psyche's Prayer: Psyche sees a temple and thinks that Cupid might be there but instead find harvest material scattered about. Psyche organized the temple and then prays to the harvest god. The harvest god says that she cannot protect her but will let her go instead of keeping her captive. She next makes it to the temple of Jove, Venuses mother-in-law, who also tells her she cannot protect her.

Venus and Mercury: Venus uses Mercury to tell everyone that she will give 7 sweet kisses and one deeply honeyed kiss of her tongue to bring Psyche to her. Instead Psyche decides to go to Venus herself.

Venus and Psyche: Venus tortures Psyche then gives her the task of sorting a huge pile of different material like wheat and barley. An ant takes pity on her and calls on other ants to help Psyche sort the pile.

Psyche's next task:  Venus mad that Psyche completed the first task gave her another task to gather golden wool from a flock of sheep. A reed keeps Psyche from killing herself and tells her how to gather the golden wool without being injured. Psyche returns with the wool and is given another task to gather water from the heart of a stream.

The Third task: Jupiter's eagle helps Psyche gather the water she needed because there was no way for her to pass without being killed.

The Jar of Beauty:  The last task is to get a jar of beauty from Proserpine who lives in the underworld. Psyche again believes she will die doing the task but is talked out of killing herself and is told how to complete the task. She does all of what she is told and makes it back to the surface but then she gets the idea to take a drop from the jar.

The Sleep of the Dead: Psyche does open the jar but it isn't beauty it is eternal sleep and it falls upon Psyche. Cupid is now healed and comes to her rescue. He puts the sleep back in the jar and sends Psyche on her way. Cupid goes to Jupiter for his help against Venus. In return Jupiter wants a beautiful woman.

The Wedding Feast: Jupiter called a gathering and put a high fine for the gods not to show up. He gave Psyche a cup of ambrosia to make her immortal. This he says will allow Cupid and Psyche to be married forever. Also allows the wedding to be between two equals. They then were married and had a daughter we know as Pleasure.

The Escape:The overall story was being told by a man stuck in the body of a donkey. The end he tries to escape because the robbers he is with plan to kill him. As he tries to escape the kidnapped girl frees him from the old ladies grasp. She tells him she will take care of him if he will just take her home.
