Week 1: Introduction

Hello my name is Colton Roberts. I am a senior this year and I cannot wait until May 2015. I am majoring in Civil Engineering and I am currently an intern at ODOT. ODOT is Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Thus, I work with roadways.  I am from Tuttle Oklahoma. I love sports and am very active. My favorite sport is wrestling. This is because I am a two time state champion wrestler in high school. Wrestling taught me many things but the main ones are hard work and dedication and to never give up on myself. Besides wrestling I love to run, wakeboard, ski, play football and really anything else athletic. I am not big on reading but when I get interested in a book it becomes hard to put it down. The Hunger Games are my favorite books. One of my favorite quotes is by Mia Hamm. It is “ the vision of a champion is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion, when nobody else is looking." I took the Epics of India class last semester with our same teacher. She is really one of the best teachers I have had while in college. She is very helpful and understanding. I am just saddened that I have never got to meet her in person.

This photo is of me and my opponent after our match in the state final my senior year. This is also one of the happiest days of my life. Nothing compares to feelings you get when all your hard work pays off.

  1. Oh, the WRESTLING: yes!!! That is a nice thing about people coming back a second time — I get to revisit the Introduction and remember stuff I had forgotten, like about you being involved in wrestling. You will see some great "strong man" stories in myths and folklore around the world, often with wrestling as a test of strength. Maybe you might even want to consider that as a possible topic! :-)

And it's weird about not meeting in person. I actually feel like I get to know you guys better in these online classes than in the classroom (there's so little time in the classroom... and not even enough time for everybody to talk!) ... but still, it is strange not being able to recognize people in a crowd, ha ha. I may be coming to Norman in January to do a workshop on online teaching, and if I do that, I will be sure to let everybody know! It would be so much fun to meet in person, and even better would be if some of you guys wanted to be in the workshop and talk about online classes from a student's perspective. I think the other professors could learn a lot from just hearing about your experiences since one of the big problems for us teaching online is that we have literally never been students in online classes ourselves. That's why I am always so curious to hear how things are going from your perspective: I've never been a student in an online course, so I am totally dependent on you guys to tell me how it's going!

  2. Quick note, Colton - I just noticed you need the Labels widget there in your sidebar (as you get more posts, it will be a big help when people visit your blog). That was an item with the Introduction instructions; you can find out how that works here:
    Introduction and Blog Navigation
Have a great first week of classes! :-)

    1. I had tried to do that and I guess it did not work. I just redid it though. Thank you.

  3. I see it now, so it's working - super! As the blog posts pile up, having the labels will be a great way to see them arranged in different ways. Thanks for fixing that up so fast! :-)

    1. You are welcome. Have a great first week of class (officially). I hope there are not that many problems. My responding is working as well so that is great!

  4. Excellent! As you can see, I set up a notifications thing for all the blogs that is working great for me, so hopefully I can keep up with convos in the comments. :-)

  5. I hadn't heard that Mia Hamm quote before but thought it was very good. While I am not much of an athlete, my mom and brother are, and I sent them the quote once I read it. To accomplish what you did in wrestling that must be a quote you constantly live by. I also like the Hunger Games. Finnick Odair is one of my all-time favorite characters.

  6. And here comes the inevitable point in my life where I begin conversations about things I don't know - sports. Despite working at OU's athletic ticket office it's just never been my thing. I'd rather read than do athletic stuff any day, but I know how much work it takes and I'm majorly impressed at all you've been able to accomplish. Have you continued with it in college at all?
My friend also took the Indian Epics course last semester, but she took this class in the fall before that. Her recommendation is a large portion of why I'm in this class, so I'm always happy to hear more good stuff about it.

  7. Hi Colton!
Wow you are very active! That is great, and good job winning the state championship for wresting TWICE. That is really awesome! I enjoyed reading your introduction, and I am glad we have this class together. I was happy to read that you think our teacher is one of the best! She seems really helpful and very nice so I am glad that you can confirm that! I also love that you are from Oklahoma because I am too! I really enjoyed your quote by Mia Hamm. It was a really good idea to put that in your introduction. So I am so excited to hear that you love The Hunger Games because so do I! They are the best books. I am so, so ready for November so I can go watch Mockingjay Part 1!! It is going to be amazing! I am glad we have that in common! Good luck this semester!!

  8. Hi Colton!

You are the serious athlete! Did you ever try out for the OU wrestling team? I bet you would have loved that! Congratulations on being a senior! May will come quickly enough, I graduate in December so I feel your excitement! I'm the same with you on reading, it's not my favorite thing in the world at all, but the Hunger Games is a really awesome series! I love your favorite quote too, that is a very inspiring statement!

  9. Hey Colton! I know exactly where Tuttle is! You could say that we were once rival towns since I am from Kingfisher. You seem like a very active person! I love skiing but I am more of a soccer player myself, but most sports are fun too. I love the quote by Mia. Congratulations on graduating in May, I will be right there with you and I am so excited. Good luck with your future plans as well as your remaining time at OU!

  10. Colton,

I've hear about other areas of engineering, but I had not yet heard of Civil Engineering. That's awesome that you have a passion for this field, and that you have an internship with ODOT. I feel that transportation, and the various means, are something that we may take for granted. I think that it's amazing that you want to work in a field that literally impacts everyone! I have never really gotten into wrestling myself, but I am from Del City and my high school was pretty crazy about it! I agree with you that Laura is an awesome teacher, and it does kinda suck that we cannot interact with her in person. I hope you enjoy the rest of this semester, and good luck with your future studies and goals!

  11. Colton, congratulations on graduating here soon in May! How exciting that must be. I’m a junior and still can wrap my mind around the fact that I’m almost finished with college. I’m also a pretty active guy like yourself. I played basketball in middle school and high school. Although I don’t play in college, I love to play whenever I get a chance or just go to the gym. I also really like our teacher for this class, she’s one of my favorites and wish I could meet her in person too. Good luck with your career in the near future!

  12. Colton, your wrestling record is impressive! I stopped participating in sports after middle school, I wasn’t great and I was involved in a lot of other things but I kind of wish I could’ve been more athletic. It seems like sports are a huge part of your life, and that’s really cool! Did you consider wrestling for OU or do you still wrestle in any other capacity?

  13. Wow Colton. You seem to be a very busy and active person. Wrestling, huh? You know, I adore sports .. hockey, football, basketball, soccer, but I don't think I've ever sat down and watched a wrestling match. I may need to rectify that in the near future.

I also agree with you comments regarding our professor. She is very nice, sweet, and patient. I had a bit of trouble navigating the online assignment section at the beginning and inundated Prof Gibbs with questions, but she was always patient and helpful in guiding me in the right direction. I'm glad that you've gotten a professor that you like at OU. I'm a senior in the Sociology-Criminology program and I have NEVER had one bad professor. I've had one boring one, but the rest are so great at what they do that their lectures are informative.

I hope your last semester-and-a-half here at OU are good ones with great GPAs.... good luck in all that you do, Colton!!!

  14. It's nice to meet you Colton! I'm a senior also, so I'm sure you share my excitement for graduation! I have recently become more and more fascinated with wresting and mixed martial arts. I've been taking mma classes for the past few months and have a newfound appreciation for the sport. Congratulations on winning state though, that's a huge accomplishment! I wish you luck in your last year and your future endeavors!

  15. Colton, I am a senior, as well and although I am excited for the arrival of May 2015, I am trying to enjoy my last bit of time here at OU! I do not want it to end! Looks like you have a great career path and goals for after graduation and are getting some great experience with your internship! Hope you enjoy all your courses this semester and good luck!

  16. Colton,

It is nice to see someone from a small town like Tuttle. I am from Okarche, so I understand the small town pride! That is so awesome that you are a wrestler. That is such a difficult sport so props to you!

I'm also a senior! Congrats on making it to this point! We are almost done so that is really exciting. Good luck with your last semester!

  17. Hello Colton! It is very nice to meet you! I have been to Tuttle a few times and it is a very nice place. One of my friend's from high school lived out there so I visited a couple of times!

I think it is wonderful that you were a wrestler and you're right it does teach you several valuable life skills. I have been a dancer almost my entire life and I know it has taught me discipline as well as many other important life lessons.

I think it's great that you're taking a class with our teacher again. I find that I do like this class, and our teacher is a great teacher. I feel bad that I tend to complain about how much work this class is, but I know it will be worth it in the end. I just need to learn to manage my time better.

It was great getting to learn a little bit about you! Best of luck with your senior year! :)

  18. Hi, Colton!

It’s nice to get to read your introduction and learn a little bit more about you. Congrats on your upcoming graduation! I am graduating in December so I understand your anticipation! Also, I have to say that it is quite an accomplishment to be a two-time state champion in wrestling! I was the student trainer for the wrestling team my senior year in high school, so I know that is no easy feat! Hope the rest of your last two semesters goes well!
