Storytelling Week 4: The Golden Deer

Sitting alone outside her home in the forest, Sita gazed upon the beautiful wildlife around her. She saw many beautiful birds flying about and she also saw cute rabbits hopping around. Then she caught sight of something out of the corner of her eye, she turned her head and saw the most beautiful deer she had ever seen. The deer was a golden color that shined brighter than the sun. The deer’s eyes were as blue as a lotus bloom and the points of his horns were sapphires. Sita was overwhelmed by the sight. She sat there speechless just watching the majestic deer. The deer did not seem to care that Sita was there. He even moved closer. Sita thought she had to be dreaming.

Rama came from around the corner and the deer jumped back a little. Sita motioned for Rama to move cautiously so he would not scare the deer away. Sita informed Rama of all the beauty the deer had in great detail. Rama hadn’t even given the deer much thought he was more focused of his beautiful wife, Sita. Then an Idea came to Sita. She would Have Rama retrieve the beautiful deer for her. Rama went and grabbed his bow and when he walked back with it the deer started running away.

Rama knew he had to get the deer for Sita. She did follow him into exile. Getting this deer for her was the least he could do. He followed the deer but could not get a shot. Everytime he got within range to shoot the deer it would start moving away again. Rama did not think much of it. He figured that for a deer like this to have survived this long it had to be pretty smart. So he kept following and kept following until finally he had the shot to take.

Rama shot the deer but much to his surprise the deer changed into a Rakshasa named Maricha. Maricha called out in Rama’s voice to Lakshmana and Sita for help before he died. Rama knew he had been foolish to follow the deer so far away and started to run back home. He was far away though. All Rama could think about was that he hoped Lakshmana did not come to help him. He kept running and running until the worst thing possible happened. His brother Lakshmana ran out of the bushes. Rama yelled for him to return to Sita. Both brothers ran as hard as they could back to their home but by the time they got there Sita was gone.

Author's Note: This story is from Ramayana. The specific story is the Golden Deer. I kept the main parts of the story the same. I just added what I thought each character was thinking. The original story does not tell much about what the characters were thinking. I like to add what I think they might have been thinking. I hope you liked the story!

  1. Hi again Colton!

Wonderful story! I don't know the background of your original story, but the way you retold this one makes me want to go read the unit! I loved that you had Rama chase the deer for Sita because she followed him into exile, which was so sweet! I wish Sita had not told Rama to get the deer though, a creature that beautiful does not need to die! It needs to be out in the wild where it belongs so everyone else can see its beauty too! Crazy shape-shifting deer though, that was wild. Good job, keep up the good work!

  2. Look who's back ;P
I read this story for another course a while back, and you did a marvelous job of retelling it. It was nice to see the character's inner thoughts, as it drew the whole story downwards and made it more relate-able. It also helped to see Sita's thoughts, as her decision is the main linchpin to the epic's main problem. Great job!
